Starting October 7, 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin enforcing stricter rules on cargo descriptions for air shipments entering the U.S. Shipments with vague or generic descriptions in the Air Cargo Advance Screening (ACAS) system will be rejected.
These changes are part of CBP’s efforts to enhance security and improve the accuracy of shipment data. By requiring clear and specific descriptions, CBP aims to better assess the contents of air cargo before it reaches U.S. borders, reducing the risk of misidentification and potential security threats.
Shippers should take steps to ensure compliance with these new standards. Generic terms like “gift” or “parts” will no longer be accepted, and more detailed descriptions are now required for all air cargo.
What steps should you take to prepare?
- Update shipment descriptions: Ensure all air cargo shipments have clear, specific descriptions to avoid rejection by CBP. Descriptions should accurately reflect the content and nature of the goods. For more guidance, review CBP's list of acceptable and unacceptable descriptions.
- Work with your manufacturers and suppliers: Make sure that your partners are aware of these new requirements and are prepared to provide the necessary information. Collaborative efforts will be key to ensuring a smooth transition to compliance.
